Scott, LA – Worker Sustains Chemical Burns In HAZMAT Incident at Waste Collection Site
Scott, LA (September 08, 2021) – On Tuesday, September 7th, the Lafayette Fire Department’s Haz-Mat team, and Scott firefighters responded to a local refuse facility when an employee received chemical burns from an unknown material that dripped onto him when it leaked from a trash bin.
Upon their arrival, firefighters found a container with an unidentified liquid material inside to which the employee had been exposed. Haz-Mat technicians entered the container wearing protective suits to test the material and quickly identify what the employee had been exposed to so that emergency room personnel could administer the appropriate treatment. The name of the substance has not been released but sources reported that it was a dangerous and deadly corrosive material. According to Scott FD, the substance had not been properly disposed of in the trash bin.
The Haz-Mat team sorted through the rest of the bin’s contents, checking to ensure no other containers held hazardous materials. Responders collected the material and the area was deemed safe. The employee sustained chemical burns of an unknown degree and is being treated at a local hospital. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Industrial Accidents in Scott
One person dies every week in an industrial accident in Louisiana. The United States was founded on industry and, as a nation, our economy relies heavily on chemical plants, refineries, and other industrial fixtures. These plants and factories are often dangerous to work in. They can cause industrial injuries such as:
- Explosions
- Fires
- Electrocutions
- Exposure to dangerous chemicals
- Slip and falls
- Burn injuries
- Numerous other OSHA and workplace safety infractions
Industrial disasters and accidents can occur in any industry. OSHA statistics state that more than 20% of workplace deaths in 2014 were among construction workers.
Known as “the fatal four,” the top dangers on job sites are falls, electrocutions, being hit by an object, and being caught in or between pieces of machinery.
Most industrial workers think the only way they can recover their lost income and medical expenses is through workers’ compensation. It is important for injured workers to know they can also file a personal injury claim.
When you are injured in an industrial accident, the numerous law firms you can choose from can seem overwhelming. In your hunt for legal representation, keep in mind that no two attorneys are the same and case results are important to consider. While no specific outcome can be guaranteed, selecting a firm with an established track record will give you a more reliable chance at success.
