Pedestrian Fatalities in Alexandria
Louisiana residents enjoy warm weather all year long. This weather comes with year-round tourists and outdoor ventures. Due to this, pedestrians are a common sight alongside the state’s roadways.
With increased foot traffic comes a higher rate of pedestrian accidents. Nationwide, roughly 129,000 pedestrians are hit by vehicles every year. A report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 5,300 pedestrians were killed in car accidents in 2015.
Multiple factors can contribute to pedestrian fatalities in Louisiana. Drivers who are under the influence substantially increase the odds of a pedestrian-involved accident. Likewise, a lack of sleep can seriously impair a driver’s reaction time. In fact, research has proven that sleep deprivation causes driver impairment equal to drunk driving. The same is also true of texting while driving.
